Movie: Midway – 2019

“Midway,” directed by Roland Emmerich, is a war film that dramatizes the events leading up to and including the Battle of Midway, a pivotal naval battle in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The film showcases the valor and strategic acumen of the U.S. Navy as they confront the Imperial Japanese Navy, ultimately turning the tide of the war in favor of the Allies.

The movie begins with the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Intelligence officer Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson) warns Admiral Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson) about the potential for further Japanese aggression, stressing the importance of breaking Japanese codes. Nimitz, newly appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, understands the gravity of the situation and assigns Layton the task of deciphering Japanese communications.

Meanwhile, pilot Dick Best (Ed Skrein) and his fellow aviators, including Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky (Luke Evans), are preparing for combat. Best is portrayed as a fearless and skilled pilot, though sometimes at odds with his superiors due to his risk-taking nature. His wife, Ann Best (Mandy Moore), offers emotional support as he faces the dangers of war.

The Japanese, led by Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto (Etsushi Toyokawa) and Chuichi Nagumo (Jun Kunimura), plan to capture Midway Atoll, a strategic point in the Pacific. They believe that doing so will eliminate the U.S. as a strategic naval power in the region. The U.S., through intercepted communications and intelligence work, learns of this plan. Layton and his team, including cryptanalyst Joseph Rochefort (Brennan Brown), play a crucial role in uncovering the details of the impending attack.

As the battle approaches, tensions rise within the U.S. command. Nimitz decides to set a trap for the Japanese by sending carriers USS Enterprise, USS Hornet, and USS Yorktown to Midway. The U.S. pilots, including Best and McClusky, prepare for what will be a defining moment in the war.

The Battle of Midway begins on June 4, 1942. The film depicts intense aerial combat and strategic maneuvers. The U.S. forces face initial setbacks, including heavy losses during their first attacks. However, the tide turns when McClusky’s squadron locates the Japanese fleet, leading to successful dive-bombing attacks on Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu. Best, in a dramatic and heroic sequence, makes a critical hit on the Japanese carrier Hiryu, contributing to the decisive victory.

The aftermath of the battle sees the Japanese fleet severely weakened, losing four aircraft carriers, which shifts the balance of naval power in the Pacific. The U.S. victory at Midway halts Japanese expansion and marks the beginning of a series of Allied successes in the Pacific.

“Midway” emphasizes the bravery and sacrifice of the pilots and sailors, the importance of intelligence and code-breaking, and the strategic decisions that led to one of the most significant naval battles in history. The film concludes with reflections on the heroism of those who fought, honoring their legacy and the turning point they created in World War II.
